Finding Perfection in Imperfection

Hello everyone. Today’s post is more personal than business related and I wanted to get real with you all and share some of my personal dealings with life’s daily routines and running a small business of my own. I feel as though we can all relate in some way, shape or form, and I know that sharing the bad and the dark isn’t always easy. Even for me — it’s been a work in progress to feel comfortable enough to open up.

Social media plays a major role on our generation today. Seeing posts, pictures, snap chats and ‘insta-stories’ that are glamorous and beautiful and perfect are inspiring and encouraging, but that’s not always real life. Don’t get me wrong — social media is a very powerful tool, I use it for my personal and professional life — it is a fantastic platform, but at times it can also create unrealistic life expectations.

You may catch yourself trying to compare your life with another blogger’s life and success because they have an aesthetically beautiful page to look at and/or they only share what’s good or pretty, they have a huge following, their business is thriving! — I say this because I do it too! But I’ve also learned that majority of the time those bloggers are almost always sharing only a small portion of their lives. I’m sure they have bad days too!

You can feel sad about something you are currently going through or have been through, but remind yourself to also be proud of how far you’ve come and how much stronger you’ve become because of those experiences.

Hence, I tell myself that it’s ok to have bad days and talk about those days, it’s ok to feel overwhelmed when things aren’t going as planned and it’s ok to sit back, take a deep breath and just chill out for a minute. Not every aspect of life needs to be seen as perfection. Find happiness in the little things instead of waiting for something big to happen!

Along with sharing the positive aspects of life, sharing the negative can also be a powerful thing and overcoming those hurdles make you stronger. And by sharing some of the real struggles, I think to myself that may be I can relate to and connect with others who are also going through a similar situation but are afraid to open up because they feel they may be judged. I hope my stories can encourage them to share their own imperfections. With imperfection comes beauty and strength. Don’t be afraid of your feelings, frustrations and emotions. You are most certainly allowed to have them!

I’ll be honest, there are days where I feel great — great about life, great about my business, I get so much accomplished, check things off my to-do list, but then there are days where I fall into a funk and wonder if I made the right choices when nothing seems to make sense. I have moments where I wonder — ‘gosh, by now I should have accomplished so much more in my life’ I ask myself “why have I not progressed farther in my career or in my life choices, why have I struggled to start a family, why did I wait so long?” But at the same time trying not to be that hard on myself. One of my favorite quotes when I need some extra uplifting is ‘Life is not a race, it’s a journey.’ It’s a great reminder to slow down and savor the beauty of what’s already in front of you, not to set too many timelines regarding what you wanted or needed to achieve by a certain time/age but haven’t and to enjoy the everyday moments and blessings in life.

A very dear family friend said to me “focus on the moment, make small daily goals that are realistic and reasonable to achieve and go from there. No need to completely change yourself overnight. That would be exhausting. Take it one step, one day at a time.”

xx, Sarah
